Samuel Marston

Design Engineer

I began my career as a Product Developer, designing life safety products before moving into Automation Engineering through an apprenticeship in Mechanical Industrial Design. Over five years in industry, I gained valuable hands-on experience covering materials, machinery design and project management while completing my degree, graduating with First-Class Honours. Following this, I joined Unimaq as a Design Engineer. Although I am still relatively new to the company, I have quickly integrated into the team and have enjoyed contributing to a collaborative and innovative working environment.

How did you get into can making?
I was looking for an opportunity to progress from designing small and medium scale automation systems to working on large-scale, high-speed machinery with more complex manufacturing processes. Unimaq offered exactly that opportunity. Since joining the business, I have been able to broaden my engineering knowledge while contributing to projects that support the continued development and innovation of can making equipment.

Unimaq stood out to me because it offers an excellent balance of technical challenge, career development and work life balance. The opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers on innovative projects while continuing to develop my own skills made it an easy decision to join the team. I look forward to contributing to Unimaq's continued growth and helping deliver engineering solutions that provide value to our customers.

How I see the 2-piece industry
Although I am new to the 2-piece can industry, my previous experience in industrial automation and high-volume remanufacturing has given me a strong appreciation of the importance of reliability, cost effective solutions and continuous improvement. As the industry continues to stabilise following the challenges of the post pandemic period, I believe there are significant opportunities for growth through innovation and efficiency. With Unimaq's strong focus on developing advanced technologies, including products such as the LED UVMBRC, we are well positioned to help customers improve productivity, enhance safety and meet increasing market demands.


Away from work life        
Outside of work, I enjoy a wide range of interests, from cycling and travelling to designing and manufacturing gas turbine and electric motor components using additive manufacturing. I also enjoy exploring new places with my Labrador, who joins me on my weekend adventures, predominantly to the beach, vintage machinery and hiking routes.
