Marcos De Almeida

Assembly Team Supervisor

I joined Unimaq four years ago after spending three years as a Mechanical Engineer at Toyota Manufacturing, where I gained valuable experience working on Toyota’s latest engine production lines and advanced manufacturing processes.

I began my career at Toyota after completing my Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering and my Master’s degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at Wrexham University. Working in such a world-class manufacturing environment gave me a strong foundation in quality, continuous improvement, problem solving and delivering high standards, which I have continued to develop throughout my time at Unimaq.

How did you get into can making?
My move into can making happened quite unexpectedly. My wife heard about an opportunity at Unimaq through one of her colleagues, who mentioned the company was looking for someone with a hands-on background and experience working in a manufacturing environment.

After three years at Toyota, I was looking for a new challenge, so I decided to apply despite having no previous experience in the can-making industry.

When I visited the site and met Eddie, I immediately felt welcomed and could see the opportunity to grow within a new industry. He gave me the chance to become part of the Unimaq team, and although there was a lot to learn, my previous experience and attitude towards development helped me adapt quickly.

Looking back, joining Unimaq has been one of the best decisions I have made in my career.

Why Unimaq?
What attracted me to Unimaq was the opportunity to be involved in the complete build process, from initial assembly through to installation and commissioning. Being able to see large-scale equipment come together and play a part in delivering projects from start to finish is something I find extremely rewarding.

I have really enjoyed being part of a team where knowledge, experience and support are shared across the business. The variety of projects means every day brings new challenges and opportunities to develop.

This experience has allowed me to progress into my current role as Assembly Supervisor, where I lead the assembly team, support colleagues and help ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently and to the highest standards.

Career highlights
One of my biggest career highlights was my very first day at Unimaq, when I was invited on a tour of the facility. I was amazed by the size and complexity of the decorator and couldn’t believe I was going to be part of the team responsible for building such an impressive machine.

When Eddie explained the number of individual components and processes involved in creating a complete decorator, it gave me a real appreciation of the scale, precision and teamwork required.

That moment confirmed I had joined a company where I could contribute to building world-class equipment while continuing to grow professionally.

How I see the two-piece industry
I see the two-piece can industry as an essential part of global manufacturing, providing reliable, efficient and sustainable packaging solutions for products used by millions of people every day.

What makes the industry exciting is the continued focus on innovation. Advances in automation, efficiency, quality and sustainability are constantly shaping how manufacturers operate and improve their processes.

Being part of Unimaq gives me the opportunity to contribute to this industry by helping deliver the equipment that enables manufacturers around the world to produce high-quality cans. It is rewarding knowing that the work we do has an impact beyond our factory and supports products used globally.

Away from work life
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and making the most of my time away from my career.

I enjoy playing football on Sundays and being involved in my son’s football journey, from attending training sessions and trips to supporting him during Saturday morning matches.

Being able to share those experiences and watch his progress is something I really value. I also enjoy keeping active, developing new interests and maintaining a good balance between work and family life.
