Carl joined Unimaq 13 years ago as the despatch/Logistic co-ordinator after 10 years as a warehousing/production manager at a local family run furniture manufacturing company. After 1 year in this role, Carl was asked if he would like to take up a role as the operations manager. leading the team into an ongoing 8-colour Decorator build.   
In the 12 years within the role, he has overseen many 8-colour Decorator builds and deliveries to customers around the world amongst various other projects.

How did you get into can making?
It was only by chance! I had seen a job advertised at Unimaq for a Logistic Co-Ordinator and after looking at the company’s website, I was fascinated with the machine that I saw on there, so I applied.  After a successful interview with Berty, I started my journey in the can industry. 
I realised early on that the products that Unimaq manufactured were extremely complex and would be a steep learning curve, as I had come from a furniture manufacturing background, but I had goals to make myself a key member of the team, so I did all I could to soak up all the knowledge that I could. As Unimaq was in the middle of a decorator build at the time, I couldn’t help myself but to nose into the assembling of it and was amazed how the machine grew from a kit of parts into a work of art of a machine.

Why Unimaq?
When the manufacturing company I was working at closed, I was looking for my next challenge.
At Unimaq, no two days are the same and that’s why I am still here 13 years later. Unimaq has grown for the better in my time here with an experienced team of experts in their own fields that are always dedicating themselves to all aspects of customer service.
When you couple this with the family-like atmosphere of the team, we can only grow stronger.

Career highlights 
I’d like to think that one of them at Unimaq must be that my peers must had seen something in me to offer me the operations manager role within 12 months of being employed by Unimaq. Another one would be overseeing a tight delivery schedule on an 8-colour head decorator which only had a 16-week turnaround.

How I see the 2-piece industry
I came to realise quite early within my operations manager role at Unimaq that to succeed I needed an understanding of the 2-piece can industry. Gaining a deep understanding of what goes into the building of an 8-colour decorator and its inkers helped in this regard. 
I can envisage a greater demand for LED UVMBRC’S due to the savings it will produce in energy and the better effect it will have on the environment.
Post-Covid, I have seen a very quiet period on new machine builds and overhaul spare parts. However, this is quite clearly changing, and I can see an influx of demand for larger equipment and spare parts.
When engaging with LinkedIn, I see the can industry growing again as new factories/lines are popping up around the world.

Away from work life        
A work/family life balance is key for me. Away from work I enjoy playing crown green bowls and holidaying with my daughter. Saturday mornings are taken watching my daughter starting off in her football career 😊
